Being Human

I just got around to watching the first episode of Being Human, and it's AMAZING!

Spoiler-free rambling:

I mean, it's actually really really good, and not cheesy at all. I knew I'd enjoy it, but I sort of expected it to be guilty pleasure viewing. Like Torchwood. But Being Human is everything that Torchwood *should* have been. Which is interesting, because it's got a Who-heavy cast and crew. Two of the three main cast have been in Who (Russell Tovey and Lenora Crichlow, in Voyage of the Damned and Gridlock, respectively), as well as guest star Dean Lennox Kelly; the writer Paul Whithouse wrote School Reunion; the producer also produced SJA. It's even got Paul Kasey in costume as a creature, FFS. Maybe it's the lack of RTD that makes it top quality, which would bode well for next year's Who...

The writing is snappy, funny and emotional in turn, without feeling like it's trying too hard. The acting is mostly top notch. The bad guys are genuinely creepy - in fact, I might go as far as to call one of them Really Fecking Scary, and he hasn't really done anything yet. There are hints of intriguing backstories, and plenty of set-up for future plots. The cast are pretty, which never hurts, and occasionally naked, which, ditto.

So I'm bewailing the fact it's only six episodes. But the news just came out today that it's been recommissioned, this time for an eight-part series. Yay!

(Also, one of my friends worked on it. Going out for his birthday on Saturday night, and will no doubt do fangirly squeeing at him.)
