I was mildly late for work this morning because when I turned the TV on to set the box for Big Brother (repeat of last night's, was still processing Who when it was on and reading you lot), it was showing the Andrew Marr show with guests Patricia Hewitt, David Tennant, Boris Johnson and a dalek.

They were talking about Doctor Who a bit (Hewitt was scared by the seamonsters, apparently) but also about the 42 days detention thing - ah, there's nothing like nice loud repeated swearing at the telly to wake you up of a Sunday morning. NO, Patricia, the police do NOT want this. Nobody wants this except for parts of your party. And just DON'T sit there and go "Well, if you're all blown up by the evil terrorists, don't come running to me..." Scaremongering is not "protecting the country", and no, the Home Secretary is NOT "elected by the public to protect the country". And locking people up for 42 days *without even telling them what they're accused of* is not protecting the country anyway. Grrrr.

On the other hand, Johnson was funny and geeky (he thinks they've got Deep Thought in the Home Office and that's how they've come up with 42 days) and suitably irritated by Hewitt. And every time I swore at the TV he pulled her up for the same thing. I don't want to like him, ffs. I resent NuLabour so much for making me agree with the Conservatives.

Tennant was sitting in between them trying desperately not to get involved in the politics. But when Marr asked him if the two of them were the representatives of the liberal intelligentsia who worry too much about civil liberties, he said he didn't think it was possible to worry too much about civil liberties. Hurray.

Aww, and I thought for a moment there that Tennant had been doing the shouting! :-)

You've caught me just as I was reading a decent column on the Moffat changeover:

Ooh, interesting!

" If you are one of those valued Who viewers that have been attracted to Doctor Who by its soap-ey elements, but actually think that the show itself is ridiculous, I utterly respect your view - there’s a great deal of evidence to support the contention that Doctor Who is absurd.

Now fuck off back to your reality shows."

HA. And I say that as a reality TV fan. I want SF in my Who, dammit.

Oh I haven't seen that bit. Would love to mind. Just when I think I can't like that man any more...

It's Monday morning and I'm still waking up, so I read that as "42 day detention song"

And now I think there should be a 42 day detention song.

I saw that on the TV and thought "Ooh ooh! I wonder if Carolyn Pickwick caught that? Will check LJ laters." ;)

You're also my Subtitle Hero. Ever since my dad went a bit deaf about ten years ago we started watching TV with subtitles, and I've never got out of the habit.

Sometimes I wish Radio 4 could have subtitles too.
