Neuter third-person singular

And I'm doing the link/ news post separately - it got a bit long.

This Comment Is Free article about linguistic pedantry is fun enough - I start disagreeing towards the end - but the comments are absolute gold. Well, if you're a pedant, anyway.

funny graphs

These graphs, and similar home-made versions, have been doing the rounds for a bit now, but I found out where they're collected - GraphJam. Hee.

Jacob from Television Without Pity has posted an interview he did on his blog, and as usual says things I utterly agree with and things I completely disagree with, but always beautifully written things that make me think.
It is of prime importance to me, as an idealistic person, that people engage with their entertainment, and deliberate about what they are putting in their bodies. Not avoid any particular thing, or gorge on some other thing because it's intellectually trendy, but just to taste whatever it is with their whole tongue. I think the quality of any given piece of television whatsoever is completely contingent on the viewer.

A canny person can get as much out of so-called "guilty pleasure" TV -- either a clue to the bigger societal picture, or a little self-examination -- as somebody else gets out of watching "Hardball." The mere act of watching a high profile show, either current events programs or that HBO "it's not TV" thing, is not enough to make you smart, or well-read, or eloquent, or thoughtful, or anything. That's borrowed ego, it's a reflected halo.

I'd probably say "largely contingent" rather than "completely contingent", but other than that, spot on.

Charlie Daniels is upset by one of his songs being on Guitar Hero because he doesn't like that the Devil wins a contest in GH. ..I'm not sure I've ever even noticed. It's probably corrupted me anyway.

And I just have to join the queue of people linking to this post from qthewetsprocket about My Problems With Rose. Which, essentially, aren't so much problems with Rose (she's just a dumb kid with a crush) but are problems with the Doctor, the "relationship", and most of all the production team. Many bonus points for kicking the essay off with a Christopher Brookmyre quote, and more points for Batship** Rose Fen TM* in the comments. Some good actual discussion too, though.

* It's just a phrase, OK? I don't mean you. Obviously.

**OK, this was a typo for "batshit", but I like it. ..Ooh, I didn't invent it, apparently, but it IS mostly used for RoseFen.

Linguistic pedantry
He shoots himself in the foot with "your" and "you're" The use of abbreviations shows laziness and/or contempt for the written word. I have never used an abbreviation in a letter, I feel that it shows a lack of respect for the reader, in that one can not be bothered to write one extra letter in order to write the word completely.

I may add that their little team will have an impossible task in a country that does not know how to spell "colour" Oh well! Textspeak will even it all out,
R U in 2 that? ;-)
