Journal style

I'm in the middle of fiddling about with my journal style, and it's taking me far longer than it should because it's a while since I've used CSS, and I've never used them properly... Anyway, it's currently stuck somewhere in between what I'm aiming for, and matgb's style because I'm using his template and walkthrough. So just to reassure you that it's going to stop looking bizarre soon, hopefully...

*wonders how she can stop things being unexpectedly purple*

testing blockquote...

  • Yellow on black post subject should be neither yellow nor black
  • Border around post(s) should be dark brown and 2px
  • Links colours need improved
  • Must do something about the profile etc links on the top left that you can't see
  • I would really like the text in the sidebar boxes to not be white, but I'm not sure if I can set it to a different colour than the normal text

I have no idea how to do any of these things, so I'll wait and see if I have any bright ideas in the morning. Or if any of you do.

Ooh, I like your new book-shelves in the header! Very cool.

And of course I say just let the purple run amok! ;-)

Wot she said.

Um, the only purple in my stylesheet is 'visited link', which may explain why a lot of stuff looks purple to you (assuming your links are regular visits like mine are), if you're going for a lighter background then dumping that bit of code completely might work, getting blue and purple to work on a dark background was a pain, and links SHOULD be blue and purple, damnit!

If you need an assist I might know what to do, but mine really was a lot of trial and error that I fixed afterwards.

Aha, of course! Duh. And the journal title is also a link...which I don't think I can change. At least not easily.

Now I know what it is I can fix it - I'd probably have realised when I got that far down anyway! I'm having a lot of fun playing with the code, I haven't done anything resembling coding for far too long.

Heh, thanks. And it looks like I might have to, even though it completely fails to match...

That is quite cool. I love your shelves. <3

Thank you :) Maybe someday I'll be able to do styles as cool as yours XD You're partly what inspired me to do my own rather than just pick a random one.

Haha, my styles are stolen. :) My current one is from...refuted, I think. I just play around with colours and headers...I'm crap at CSS. :)

Hehehe, well, they always look good anyway!

Oooooo, tres cool!

Merci bien :)

Ooo, speaking of your user pic (what?), I've been watching Heroes (s1) for the past couple of weeks. I put it on those nights when I go to bed early, or don't have to get up early the next day, with the TV's shutoff timer set for 2 hours.

After a certain point, of course, I am only getting subliminal Heroes. And each night I try to start with the last bit I remember playing while I was still awake the night before. So, it takes awhile to get through each disc.

BUT THE MAIN POINT IS...I've really been enjoying it! The series, not the process.

Ooooooh. You've made me want to watch it again now. I might wait and then watch the whole of S1 and S2 just before S3 starts...I think it's scheduled for August and there are loads of episodes, yay. And a three-hour premiere with an hour of catchup and then 2 hours of NEW SHOW YAY.
Apr. 8th, 2008 10:35 pm (UTC)
Ooo, this would have been cool!
Apr. 9th, 2008 10:58 am (UTC)
Whoa, yeah! Want!

Yes, your Fiendish PlanTM becomes all too clear, now...

The bookshelf header is wonderful.

However, the tan links in the sidebars are not that easy to read for someone who has vision problems, or gets glare on the screen. I have problems with both. I can see the links OK now, as it's dark, and I'm reasonably cool. When the sun's shining into the room, or if I'm a bit hot and my vision/colour vision fades (Unthoff's Syndrome), I won't be able to see those links at all.
Anyone else with vision problems who looks at your blog will also have problems.

Yeah, I thought that would be a problem. I'll fiddle with it more tonight. What about the tan on dark brown? I know the more reddish one isn't nearly readable enough, I need to find a better colour for that.

Just looked up how to do the border, but you've sorted that, worth noting I've dumped my white border already so my walkthrough is out of date, ah well.

Sidebar box text is theoretically simple, they're widgets, so put the color into one of the widget boxes, you can even make the links in there different colours to in your main journal if you want (or vice-versa).

Looking good. I suck at colours, I'll leave that guesswork to you, took me ages to get mine somewhere I was happy with them.

Heh, yes, it was quite fun figuring out what things did when they didn't apply to how your journal is just now :D

And thank you! I'll try making things different colours in the widget boxes.

I like the bookshelves and the brown and orange colours.
Apr. 9th, 2008 11:01 am (UTC)
Thank you! So do I, though I need to make them more readable.

It looks awesome! Everytime I see your 'rainbow' bookshelf,
I smile with glee!
Interstingly, the block quote didn't show up on my friends
page but now that I'm at your journal, it's there.
Very nice.
Apr. 9th, 2008 11:01 am (UTC)
Thank you :) I think the block quote only works with certain journal styles, or has to be defined, or something...

If you haven't got it already, Firebug is incredibly useful when mucking around with CSS, especially for those "Hm, 5px padding? 10px?" moments when you just need to frob values and see what happens, or if you can't figure out which style is making an element look weird.

Your shelves are indeed awesome :)
