We should have a union

I have no idea what's going on with this strike tomorrow, or whether to participate or not. I've read that the strike is regarding about four different things - the censorship of interests from the "popular interests" page, including bisexuality and depression as well as fanfiction; the plan to get rid of basic accounts, ignoring the advice of the Advisory Board; the way in which this plan was communicated to users (ie not at all); and the attitude to users of Anton Nosik of SUP in this interview the other day.

Except LJ have now reversed the first of these, are reviewing the second one and have apologised for the third, and will probably muzzle Nosik as soon as possible. Hmm. I wasn't sure about how effective the strike would be in the first place, but since the THREAT of strike appears to have made a difference (although it could just have been all the complaining), it seems I was wrong. The strike is still going ahead, I think just to underline how strongly people feel about this.

So I'll be joining redatt and caitirin - I'm not sure enough about what the strike is for, or the effect it will have, to actively participate by saying "I'm striking", but I won't be crossing the picket lines either. I won't be posting, commenting or reading LJ tomorrow. (I'll have to set an alarm for midnight so I know when to log out...)

I kinda figured that the strike is just about
letting them know who's in charge around here.
Yeah, don't mess with us!

Heh, yeah, more or less, I think.

I can't imagine that the strike will be the least bit effective. The new overlords would have to -care- about our not posting in order for it to be effective, and I cannot see any reason for them to care. It certainly won't have an impact on the SUP coffers, and I imagine that's where their concern lies.

The theory is that we can have an effect on the coffers, because advertising rates ARE affected by the amount of activity on LJ. If we can cause a distinct drop in activity, it'll scare the advertisers, because obviously, they want people to see their adverts. And SUP doesn't want their advertisers worried about their page hits declining.

I would be interested to know if the Russian users are involved in this strike, because AFAICT, they're who SUP are most interested in.

Heh. I suspect advertising rates will only be affected where advertising response can be measured -- in the Plus accounts. Perm & Paid accounts activities will have no such measureable effect. We are, in effect, deadwood to SUP.
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:30 pm (UTC)
To an extent, we are, but on the other hand, all LJ activity is monitored - the number of posts made, the number of unique visitors, the number of page hits are all available. And since the size of LJ is what attracts advertisers in the first place...

I'd be much more willing to say the strike is useless if LJ hadn't backed down and apologised already, so they're obviously worried about something.

I suspect it's less a worry about a strike than it is a worry about us seeing the True Face of SUP too soon in the relationship. Once they've built up the fast growing Russian LJ population, our perception of SUP and their motives will matter even less to them.

Oh, my, I -am- rather glass-half-empty about this, aren't I...
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:35 pm (UTC)
You cynic! Deep down I think you're right, but I'm willing to try anyway :D
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:40 pm (UTC)
While I certainly appreciate your sentiment, sadly I believe the Strike will merely serve to deprive us all of each other's company. As I've said (more or less) elsewhere:

Yeah, let's punish each other! That'll show 'em!

Anyway, I'll probably be on another effectively interminable conference call tomorrow, so, not unlike Mr. Dave Tee Burker, I've not much of a life.
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:43 pm (UTC)
I'll be on twitter, anyway :) And probably Facebook...

(ANOTHER conference call? Urgh.)
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:48 pm (UTC)
I need to start twittering and LJ posting, more. I will, of course, more likely than not, respond to tweets. :)

(I thought I was free of the conference calls for this one particular customer. Then...they opened a Severity 1 case today and I had to grab it, EVEN THOUGH THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM IS NOT LIKELY TO BE ONE OF THE PRODUCTS I SUPPORT. Ah, well. I figured I could, at least, rally together other resources related to the most likely cause and get the customer resolution in that way.)

BAD CLIENTS. Boo. I'm on call tomorrow, and there's a decent chance I'll get called in, and therefore have to work all of Easter. Ah well. I'm sure everyone will take Easter eggs in...
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:29 pm (UTC)
AFAICT, [it's the Russian users] who SUP are most interested in.

I believe this is painfully true.
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:33 pm (UTC)
Seems to be.

I'd love to just leave, but the fact is that this isn't just an ordinary seller-buyer relationship. If I was just after a blogging platform, I'd have been gone from LJ a long time ago, but all my peeps are here! The only reason LJ is still as popular is the difficulty in migrating your whole friendslist and communities and everything to another platform.
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:43 pm (UTC)
Eggzackly. It's the company we keep.

I will say, however, that, unlike Facebook and myspace and the lot, LJ has threaded conversations and the like. It's those features which made LJ, itself, from a functional point of view, attractive to me in the first place.
Mar. 20th, 2008 10:50 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's got so many things that I sort of take for granted now. *sigh* I'll probably be here forever, continually moaning about what the new owners have done NOW ;)

anton_nossik responds to the reactions to his interview in English on his own LJ here.
Mar. 22nd, 2008 09:00 pm (UTC)
Hmm. He's still talking crap, and I have no idea whether to blame the language barrier or not.
Mar. 21st, 2008 12:20 pm (UTC)
I can't strike. I have a diary to keep and am trying to show that I'm doing as advised by P-doc. Othewrwise I might do.
Mar. 22nd, 2008 09:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, if I'd been doing a photo a day or something, even, I'd probably have kept going.
