Constructivity

The course today was vastly improved - a much livelier tutor helped a lot. Although he's also very deadpan, very sarcastic, and is teaching us things by being devil's advocate in any discussion, usually very loudly. Because we'll have to deal with union members shouting at us, apparently. I have discovered I know virtually nothing that I should know about this job (Union health & safety rep, if I haven't mentioned) - I don't know who the "local" convenor is, but then my branch of the union is in London anyway, because that's where most of the company is. I've never been to a meeting, and definitely wasn't elected or appointed by the union members. Um, never mind. I'm sure it's fine.

I've just spent an hour and a half tidying and cleaning my living room (my dad's coming round, yes) and I can see a ridiculous amount of the floor. It's very odd. I definitely need a rug. (And more bookshelves.) Of course, I've just moved half of the random stuff into my bedroom, which is really too small for such things. Boxes full of vinyl records shouldn't live in the middle of the floor. Must try and get some under-bed storage.

You get shouted at by both sides on occasion :-) Takes nerves of steel to shut down operations! Who actually appointed you then?

Oh, I know about the election stuff, but the fact is that we can get on with that properly when you get back - you are pretty unopposed and as it's such a tiny office in such a far off branch, there are certain things that are just formalities. The elections are important but in an office of 40, it shouldn't take too much effort... :)

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. Only one of the ten people on the course has been properly elected by members so far anyway, it's not just me who was a bit "Um..." about it!

You don't have to be a rep to do the course, many Stewards do it just to be aware and be able to support the H & S Rep, you do need to be democratically elected to be recognized.

I'll just need to get it confirmed - I think most people are aware that I volunteered for the job, and nobody else wanted to do it anyway.
