Liveblogging Torchwood

Excuse any horrible typing! Going back through with bold now to clarify things a bit, since I suck at liveblogging coherently.

I'm looking forward to this with a certain amount of hope. Last week's was great, clearly, though I haven't talked about it here yet. But more self-referentialness instead of self-importance, which is good.

- I've seen quite a few bits of this one in the trailers...

- WTF handy baseball bat?! In Cardiff?!

- Hmm, low-budget Niki in Heroes thing :D Single female kills two burly bad guys offscreen with her bare hands, which we hear, then doesn't remember it.

- Oh, it was a cricket bat. Not that someone's that much more likely to have a cricket bat under the bed in Cardiff, I don't think. And that's not andy. where is my PC andy?!?!

- ..That was weird and unrealistic... Er, I have no idea.

- Oh, nice questioning technique, Jack. It's gone all CSI Miami, where they just run round shouting "You done it! Don't deny it!" at people. Very Detritus, now I think about it. Undercut by Ianto... Oh, were they just trying to overload her? Suppose it might be forgiveable, then. Or not.

- Keeping up the rep as The World's Least Secret Organisation, then This was when they were showing Beth round the Hub for no particular reason.

- They better have a damn good reason for Jack being all torturey...

- Hahahaha. Ianto's gone all rebellious schoolkid.

- Was that OWEN confirming that Jack's manners are atrocious in bed?! Ha. Don't believe it, though.

- OOOOkay, creepy robot lady. Thing.

- Ha! I was about to say name, rank, serial number. and I don't even know who she is.

- Barrowman still makes some weird acting choices at times. Handwaving melodrama when what I thought quiet worry would have been better, IIRC

- yay technobabble Tosh

- WTF happened to Gwen, their "Heart"? FFS. We are Not Impressed with torture. Especially since they didn't even try anything else. Yes, let's all stand around and look mildly concerned while our boss tortures someone.

- Actually, this is similar to one of the books. This was the whole "sleeper agent" thing, which is similar to something in Border Princes.

- Hooray for Tosh, trying to find another way!

- This feels like it needed a few more scenes - we've rushed through all the Change stages a bit! I was talking about Beth's stampede through Denial, Anger, Fear, Bargaining and Acceptance, or whatever they are - it happened in about ten minutes show time.

- Oh, I thought that was Rhys for a second. Bah. It was one of the Sleeperblokes. (Heh.)

- Oh dear, it's all gone a bit melodramatic (and badly acted). I like the arm things, though. I think this was Beth begging for her life, possibly. Which didn't affect me much.

- 007 - was that Jack's vault? Or Suzie's?

- Bit of a logic leap from Owen. Why was "she can fake all her vital signs" the only possible answer to why the lights were doing funny things?

- I'm missing James Marsters quite a lot here.

- This feels very, very RTD. All humans and love...

- Would the hospital staff really just let them wander off with a possible murderer with a stick coming out of their hand like that, even if they are The Mighty Torchwood?

- I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be finding all this blood and guts zombie-movie funny. Is this this year's Countrycide?

- Why does Jack not know what any of the alarms mean? This amuses me.

- Ianto knows everything. Hurray! He's very jolly tonight. Which is odd.

- They happened to have a radio receiver switched on at that particular frequency?

- Ooooooh, I like their dragon on the wall of the Hub.

- Oh, for GOD'S SAKE. This is far too ambitious a plot for 50 minutes of TV. Heh. although I think this bit's from one of the books too - just not sure if it's the same one. Either that or I'm having weird deja-vu things. I still think it was far too ambitious a plot, yes. And there's a bit about nuclear fuel rods in Another Life, which is what I was thinking of.

- Why are they all transforming their arms but nothing else? Costume budget of £3.67? Next week, the aliens are humanoid with purple ears...

- Yowch. You killed Kenny. You bastards.

- Ah, the traditional expositionary dying villain, threatening the heroes that they know all about them

- Since when did Jack stop coming back from death, and just not bother dying or even having noticeable blood loss?! This is bothering me greatly. Just last week he was "dead" for at least a few minutes.

- Could this be another arc plot?! Good lord. Bets taken now on whether we ever hear about these other "sleeper" agents, some of whom are activated, again?

- I'm sure that bloke said there were others...didn't he? And we saw them...

- The whole emotional and learning arc here seems rushed...Oh, never mind! Heh. No, I was right in the first place.

- Oh, no, it's another bloody sacrificial thing. Gah.

- Hang on, why did the guns kill her anyway? *rewinds* No, I still don't know. Her forcefield was down? I'm STILL not sure I understand.

- Hmm, was that meant to be platonic Jack/Gwen? Possibly. And WTF is he brandishing her swordarm (um) about for?

I'm not sure if this just seemed kind of rushed and disjointed and NASTY because I was giving half my attention to typing. But we seem to be in Torture And Killing Is Fun (And OK If You Angst About It For Five Minutes Later) Torchwood, which I'm not keen on. The Doctor would have fixed Beth and used the knowledge he gained to (peacefully) eliminate the threat from the others. I suspect TW will just forget about them all forever...

Ah well. I will go and read communities.

Oooh, I look forward to reading this, as it's written by a mate of mine--and I don't have a tv and don't have time to watch it at the mo! Enjoy!

Ooh, cool! Remember the BBC iPlayer will have it for a week :)

'- Keeping up the rep as The World's Least Secret Organisation, then'

Was that about the 'Torchwood' written along the bonnet of the car?

My main comment is in fact identical to the one for last week's episode: JUST CHOP HER BLOODY ARM OFF.

The no lawyer no phone call stuff was a bit Gordon Brown 90 days, no?
Jan. 23rd, 2008 10:03 pm (UTC)
You know, it wasn't, but I can't remember what it actually WAS about now. I suck at note-taking. It was ridiculous, though. Oh, I know, it was when they took Beth into the Hub and showed her round!

Yes, now that you come to mention it, the chopping would have worked this time. Last week I believe we got explanatory dialogue about how that would somehow cause the thing to blow up...

I thought they were going for modern parallels, yes. But they should probably have stressed a bit more that they disapproved of this stuff, to my mind.

Yeah, I thought they were making the 'we can hold you as long as we damn like you alien scum' thing a bit too glamorous.
Reckon the BBC is getting paid to insidiously plant this?
Jan. 23rd, 2008 10:42 pm (UTC)
It's clearly a plot by BBC Wales to bring down the country.
Jan. 23rd, 2008 10:56 pm (UTC)
What, and declare a Socialist Republic?
Jan. 23rd, 2008 11:07 pm (UTC)
Within the year, I'm sure. *starts stockpiling cheese*

It was down by then.

The only bit I really enjoyed was that they put the sleeper agent in box 007. Heeee! And I only liked that bit because I spotted it.

What happened to Ianto? He used to be such a woobie!

Was that OWEN confirming that Jack's manners are atrocious in bed?! Ha. Don't believe it, though.

No, it was Ianto, which explains why he was being so jolly perky. He's getting special attention from the boss.

I know! Ianto's gone all cheeky!

I thought it was Owen who said something and Ianto responded to him, and then Jack shut them both up...must rewatch. But Ianto would make more sense!
Jan. 23rd, 2008 11:36 pm (UTC)
Ohh, perhaps so, you'll have to let me know after your rewatch :~)
Jan. 23rd, 2008 11:39 pm (UTC)
Everyone else in the world seems to think it was Ianto, and is very excited about it, so looks like I was wrong!

He's getting special attention from the boss.

Plus, he gets to go out and play with the big kids, instead of staying in and making coffee all the time.

"He is dashing; you've got to give him that" was awesome!

The English cricket team is really the cricket team of England and Wales. So its perhaps not too odd an object. A rugby ball might have been more appropriate but massively less so at the same time.
Jan. 24th, 2008 05:56 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think I knew that, but I still never got the sense that cricket was particularly popular in Wales...
Jan. 24th, 2008 05:35 am (UTC)
Yeah, I thought Ianto was srsly odd this week too. Hmm, not sure if I like it.
Jan. 24th, 2008 05:59 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I like a bit of snark, but Ianto seems to have totally changed personality.
Jan. 24th, 2008 12:21 pm (UTC)
Was that OWEN confirming that Jack's manners are atrocious in bed?!

It was Ianto, I seem to remember.

I wonder how they were able to shoot Beth, given that she had such powerfully strong skin?

Jan. 24th, 2008 05:58 pm (UTC)
People are saying that her skin wasn't solid when her forcefield was switched off, and she'd switched it off so she could be frozen. Or something. I do remember her switching herself on at the arm at one point...

Would the hospital staff really just let them wander off with a possible murderer with a stick coming out of their hand like that, even if they are The Mighty Torchwood?

Well the petrol tanker did blow up while they were on the way out, so I'm guessing the staff were a bit distracted!
