Right, I meant to do a whole links post when I got sidetracked by the usenet stuff, so here are the rest of the links, if I can remember them.

A history of usenet, with interviews with some of the people involved.

Stephen Fry has a blog! Well, it's down just now - I think it got slashdotted, even if /. wasn't actually involved - but there's a fun picture there, so it's worth going to see anyway. When it comes back, the first entry is a stupidly long and geeky article about smartphones and the iPhone. I didn't realise *quite* how much of a geek he was. Heh. Syndicated as fryblog, natch.

So, you know how people make fanvids on YouTube? Like this Heroes one, for instance. Well, someone has basically made a McCann fanvid. I'm boggled. I think there are a few of them, but I didn't really go looking. One of the thematically linked recommendations was this - the missing child appeal, in song, from Chris Morris's Jam. It's scary how much of Chris Morris's stuff is coming closer to fact.

This is bloody scary. A girl was raped in the West End on Thursday, in the car park at the corner of Otago Street and Gibson Street, at about half ten at night. That's a reasonably busy part of the West End, too. Be careful out there, people.

Finally, if you're REALLY bored, you can join the masses laughing at Theo Hobson's latest idiocy on Comment is Free. Hurrah!

Theo Hobson has a point. But he's merely repeated the basics four times as a sweeping generalisation, rather than talking about why, and what to do about it. Shame really.

Well, he has about half a point, I think. He's right that we seem to have lad's mags and bad TV rather than adult discussion about sex, but I'm disturbed by his apparent opinion that sex is always dark and freaky and emotionally scarring.

Oh, I don't think it always is - but I do think that treating sex as if it's not supposed to have emotional consequences can lead to people being hurt a lot.

Yes, I agree, but treating it like it always has to have emotional consquences isn't the answer either. Sex is neutral - it consists of whatever the people involve bring to it.

Isn't always - but in my experience it is more often than it isn't, due to people being, well, human.

Steal away - I gacked it from someone else, who picked it up goodness knows where...

It didn't look to me like he was saying that, but rather that it definitely has that side - and personally I would say that the existence of the Smiths' back catalogue would tend to show that he's right.

It's a bit like the argument that most drug propaganda lacks credibility because it denies that drugs can be rather fun. Or, as Mr Cave put it, "The love song must be born into the realm of the irrational, absurd, the distracted, the melancholic, the obsessive, the insane - for the love song is the noise of love itself and love is, of course, a form of madness."

Actually, re-reading, I think you're right, but he focuses so much on that side - "Sex is not something to celebrate. It is something to be deeply equivocal, and cautious, about. Its power is something to be feared" - that it doesn't come across that he believes that yeah, sometimes it can be light-hearted and fun and consequence-free.

His balance is wildly off, yes.

Incidentally, I have to get round to sticking up a photo I took a few weeks ago of a friend crocheting a dalek.

Ha :D I've seen pictures of the crocheted daleks, they're great.

Will have to look at Stephen's blog...if he stops talking about the i-Phone or whatever it is.

Girl getting raped on Otago Street is shocking, although I'd make sure I DEFINITELY had friends with me if I were walking on that road at that time. Yes, that is a fairly busy bit of town, but the man who did it must have capitalised on that fact in order to carry out the crime (especially since that land is dark and deserted, as far as I remember).
