Evolution of the Internet

Stage 1: Usenet. There's a meme going round asking you to google groups your first usenet post. I had a look last night, but when I looked under my name or my main pseudonyms, I couldn't find anything before a few posts to Buffy newsgroups in 2001, which I knew was crap. Tonight, I managed to remember the random string of letters and numbers that was my student ID, and find my actual first posts. And I'm freaked out. My very first usenet posting was in rec.arts.theatre.musicals, on November 15 1995, and it was in response to a question about...John Barrowman. Heh. (I was telling them he'd been a kids' TV presenter in the UK.)

After a couple of test postings to music groups, the next thing is my first posting to alt.fan.pratchett, where I lurked for years and occasionally popped up to ask something dumb. Apparently the fact nobody had replied to my AMAZING BARROWMAN FACT had put me off, because it took me till May 7 1996 to post again. I started this thread, asking about whether the new Discworld quiz book was out. The first person to reply to me was the compiler of it, one David Langford. The thread descended into a bit of an argument about commercialism, featuring Pterry himself getting somewhat defensive about the volume of merchandising, Stephen Briggs popping up for a word or two, and possibly the post they took the inspiration to publish Nanny Ogg's Cookbook from. I'm far more impressed now, when I know properly who all these people are, than I remember being at the time.

Not bad. I think my scariest moment on Usenet was Jyoti Mishra remembering me as a longtime reader of uk.music.alternative.

Oh, I used to read that! I think. I'd been remembering it at uk.music.indie, but I was definitely on one that Jyoti posted to.

John barrowman
you know, i love the amusing facts that folk trot out on occasion and then look at them years later, the first post bout barrowman confidently stated,
"He is, by reputation, a suave ladies man, linked to beautiful women older than he, such as Angie Dickinson and Cher"
Those unreliable reputations :p

I'm terribly amused at how many people I know in the thread about the quiz book.
