WTF Boldthrough?

For goodness' sake, I leave you lot alone for 48 hours and it all explodes again. innocence_jihad has a round-up I intend to read properly later, and am mainly linking to for my own convenience.

I've only briefly investigated what's going on, and therefore have only two points to make:

  • Art or fiction or even photos featuring teenagers having sex is not paedophilia. It might be illegal, depending on the age of consent where you are, it might be immoral, it might be abuse of trust, but it's not paedophilia - that's being attracted to pre-pubescent children. If we could stop with the drama queening and Daily Mail-esque hysteria (yes, I know it's coming from both sides) I'd be a lot more inclined to listen to the people complaining about it. Has Chris Morris taught us nothing?

  • Yes, I know fanart/ fanfic featuring under 18s is arguably illegal on US servers. Yes, SixApart and LJ have the right to do what they want. My problem is when they lie and obfuscate and contradict themselves about what their policy actually is. If they wanted no sexual situations between any under 18s in either art or writing, they could just have said so. But they would have lost a lot of members, so instead they refused to give proper policies, implied that everything would be fine, and then quietly started deleting people without warning again.

  • Anyway, yesterday was very geeky and enjoyable. Went to the Doctor Who mini exhibition in Paisley museum with gwinniegirl, laerad, mind_expander and gemz_lee, and it was alright considering it was tiny and in Paisley museum. I have more pics that I'll get uploaded later. Then we went back to gwinniegirl and laerad's and spent the next 12 hours or so playing Playstation (Guitar Hero 80s, SSX Tricky, Guitar Hero II co-op, Celebrity Deathmatch, Dead or Alive II) and watching Rent. Which is fabulous, actually. And discussing the new expansions for Dawn of War and Civ 4. And then topping it off with a viewing of Once More With Feeling before bed. Hurrah! (*swoons at Giles*)

Edit: Oh, was it someone on here who posted a link to the sociology study of geeks that talked about how it's polite in geek company to correct people's pronunciation, because we're so used to having only seen words written down? I'd like to see the article again, cos I was talking about it yesterday, but I seem to have misplaced it. Edited edit: Got it - report of a Minicon talk, here. Cheers to andrewducker!

    Also, for gemz_lee:

I don't know who posted the article, but I can recall seeing it myself, which narrows it down a fair bit assuming we saw the same link. Most likely I suspect is james_nicoll but that's a guess, I also don't appear to have stored it for potential linkage, I really must start using delicious more.

On the whole fuss itself, yes, pretty much agree; it's not that they deleted the stuff that's borderline illegal, it's that they weren't clear about what they were looking for beforehand, nor was there a fair cease/desist process. I've seen the image, and Harry looks to be about 16 to me, which makes it obscene under US law.

The law may be an ass, but they have to stick to it. Fandom has a strong point, but is being it's typical hysterical self.

OTOH, with everyone going off all over the place, an aggregation service that can provide a decent 'friends' page online supporting auth=digest would be useful I think.

Hmm, my server won't support WPMU, but might support multi-account gregarious. Must plot...

I had it on my linkblog - and therefore looked it up at:

In which case it may have been you I got the link from, but the thread I was thinking of was this one:
    http://james-nicoll.livejournal.com/897532.html?thread=12563964#t12563964
In which you got the keywords for the search.

So the real question is why was our host talking about it...

A-ha! I thought it was you, but I couldn't see it in your journal. Should have thought to check the link blog. Cheers!

Ooh, sounds intriguing. I do feel like I'm going to need a decent blog aggregator soon.

I use bloglines - it works the way I like aggregators to work and because it's online I can get to it from work and home without losing my place.

I'll have a look at it. After reading through various posts about the aggregators, they seem much more versatile than I thought they were.

Oh I hate that -- finding I'm mispronouncing a word because I've only ever learnt it written down.

I do it quite a lot, but it just amuses me. I don't like when other people do it and I'm not sure whether to correct them or not, because I know I appreciate being corrected but I'm never sure if other people will!

Art or fiction or even photos featuring teenagers having sex is not paedophilia. It might be illegal,

Indeed it is. As the recent case at Stow College illustrates.

Paedophilia is different legally/psychologically. Legally its sex with someone below the age of consent IIRC.

Stow College? Must have missed that one, I'll look it up.

Is it really? I guess I should stop complaining about people misusing the word, then, but I didn't think it was actually used legally, because people get charged for specific acts, rather than the thoughts behind them.

Ah, I found the thread on altnation. It bears a remarkable similarity to a conversation I was having about Chris Langham on digitalspy.

If it was a case of photoshopping kids' heads onto adult bodies, while it is a bit freaky, I don't like that it carries a jail term :S

There's a Celebrity Death Match Game!? Damn I should get me one of those new fangled console thingies.
Interesting on the paedophilia comments, I've always thought there should be a difference drawn between having sex with pre-pubescents and post-pubescents as the latter is only made unacceptable by social norms and an arbitrary legal line (whereas the former is biologically unacceptable). I remember how you told me about how all the UK guys started getting excited about Dawn when she turned 16 and how all the US guys thought that was sick and wrong. So arbitrary. Personally I'm so happy that Hermione is legal now! Or at least I hope she is! And that hot chick from Me and You and Everyone We Know. She's legal too! Ace!
Also love the geek thing. But even still - how do you make quixotic not sound like chaotic?!

Apparently the celebrity deathmatch game is about 5 years old :D It's good, but a bit random - there seemed to be a special button combination for the killing blow, except we couldn't quite figure out what it was. It was fun beating up Ron Jeremy while being Shannen Doherty, though.

Hmm, yes, presumably Hermione is legal now! I'm not sure if we ever learned her birthday, which means I haven't fallen irretrievably into Potter fandom yet.

How do you MAKE quixotic sound like chaotic? I thought it was key-hotic, not kay-otic, though I think I used to think it was kwix-otic.

key as in kee-otic. Perhaps, it would make more sense if it was pronounced like that but I'm sure I got one of those websiste to pronounce it for me once and it was said kay-otic, but in an American accent

Martin got me civ 4 - Beyond The Sword for my birthday, I love it! Do you like it?? I can't imagine playing plain old civ now, I've been playing Warlords expansion for soooo long! I just can't get away from civ though, Martin's tried to get me to play other games, that admittedly are OK, but they just aint Civ dammit :)

I haven't even installed Civ on my new computer yet! Must get around to it :) You know what I'm like with games, though.
