PSA

Tonight at 10 on BBC4 there's a new panel quiz show about books. Called, er, The Book Quiz.

Host is David Baddiel, guests this week are India Knight, Richard Herring, John Simpson and Joan Bakewell. With any luck it should be interesting...

It was on last night. Bits of it were OK. The general level wasn't pitched very high. Baddiel was far less annoying than when he pretends to be working class and drones on about football.

I still didn't know a lot of the answers :( Must read less SF/ fantasy and more "normal" books!

...or on the other hand it could turn out as smug and humourless as Never Mind The Full Stops. I've found panel games work even less well on tv than they do on Radio 4, unless of course the godlike Stephen Fry is involved. Hope Baddiel and co can pull it off.

I quite like Never Mind The Full Stops! Though yes, it is very smug. I wasn't that keen on the Book Quiz, unfortunately.

But QI must be back on soon, the new series has been/ is being filmed just now. Hurrah!

Not quite relevant, but... I suppose there's no way you could get me a signed photo of the gorgeous Neil Oliver, is there? I know, probably not, but it's worth asking... :-)

I don't even work in the Beeb's building any more, unfortunately, so I doubt it :( But he is lovely! And he was born in Ayr...

It was on the other day too and I thought it might have been good but found it a bit dry.

Ah, I just spotted it on the listings last night... I wasn't that impressed either, but I suppose I'll keep watching because I want to support book-related TV!

India Knight? Are there books about shopping at boutiques being reviewed? Okay, I'm being snarky.

She didn't know many of the answers, IIRC :D

I was relieved to see that there was actually quite a lot about books - that it wasn't just an excuse for people to be funny at one another.

On the other hand, I thoght there was still too much scripted 'comedy' from David Baddiel. They should have tried to let the idea stand on its own, and let the humour develop naturally between host and contestants.

Mind you, it's early days yet, and I never liked David Baddiel much anyway.

Yep, that's exactly what I thought. Also that every single panel game the BBC do doesn't have to be an exact replica of Have I Got News For You - they work better if they're allowed to develop an identity of their own.

Meh, I only thought it was OK. Too much scripted "comedy", and the editing at the start was absolutely shocking. But I will keep watching.

I want to know why Myleene Klass has been left off the panel. Isn't there a rule that states she has to be in every new TV show?

I've been wondering why she's suddenly started popping up everywhere, it's odd. She must have got a new agent, or something. It was when I saw her on the Quizzers table on the People's Quiz that I was particularly confused.
