The meaning of evil

From BBC News:

The Vatican has urged all Catholics to stop donating money to Amnesty International, accusing the human rights group of promoting abortion.

The Vatican, which regards life as sacred from the moment of conception, said it was an "inevitable consequence" of the group's policy change.

Amnesty said it was not promoting abortion as a universal right.

But the group said that women had a right to choose, particularly in cases of rape or incest.

I could rant, but I should be in the shower getting ready to go out, and honestly, I'm getting bored of writing the same damn rant about the iniquities of the Catholic church, and you're probably getting bored of reading it. So suffice it to say that I've made a donation to Amnesty, and I'd urge you all to do the same, even if it's only a few quid.

Since you have a salary, can I suggest making monthly donation from it? You won't notice it after a while, and they'll send you the magazine. Bex'n'me decided a wee while ago to make a set monthly donation to some charities of our choice (Childline, AI... and a third that I don't remember the name of that funds sending volunteers and medics out to do aid work in third world contries), and it really is worth it for the equanimity with which you can then ignore all tub shakers you meet.

I'll probably do something about it after my next pay rise :D I've already got a monthly donation to Sense set up, but I can probably afford an Amnesty one.

Yeah, Amnesty are trying to STOP women being imprisoned for using contraception or having abortions, which is a wonderful aim. I hate the fact that this worldwide Church publicity, straight from the horse's mouth, only serves to make people everywhere who have nothing to do with the situation (and therefore no concept of all the problems involved) start a misguided mission to stop any kind of progress, tolerance or real compassion for what Christians see as "sinners". *bangs head off desk*

I read that and could only imagine the kind of conflict that would cause for a more liberal-minded RC. How could the Vatican possibly justify such an attack on a charity that works to aid the relief of suffering? They aren't exactly doing a sterling job of removing prejudice.

Luckily, I think most of the more liberal-minded RCs are perfectly used to ignoring a good number of the edicts that come from Rome!
