Schrodinger's cat is dead.

Ten easy steps to fascism from the Guardian, and how America is heading along that road. Naomi Wolf article; very interesting and kinda scary.

China Mieville talks about fantasy and geekery.

"When I was moving into my new house a few years ago we were having all our kitchen stuff delivered and my then-partner got off the phone, turned to me and said 'the fridge men are coming,'" explains Miéville. "Now, it seems to me that there are two kinds of people: those that hear that sentence and think 'oh good, delivery of the white goods', and then there's those people who imagine a kind of enormous cyborg thing..." Miéville trails off. There's absolutely no doubting which camp he falls into."

Hee. I'm in that camp too.

Quantum physicists say Reality does not exist when we're not looking at it. This is obviously because I'm wearing my Schrodinger's Cat t-shirt.

I forgot to start my computer downloading Heroes this morning. (I'm unlikely to remember many things at 6.30am. I should start leaving myself notes, if it's important.) This means I have to go home and *wait while it downloads*. Argh.

I watched it last night. Some very interesting developments...

I just saw it. Indeed!

..I want it to be next week now. Damn.

No we're about it. Nothing exists unless I'm observing it. Mmmm, solipsism.

True. I'm fairly sure all of you only exist in the interval between when you type a comment and when I read it.

Our digital recorder somehow neglected to record Heroes last night and then we couldn't find it anywhere online. :(

It's on the NBC website now, though. Yay!

They also usually repeat them on Friday on the SciFi channel, if you get that.

I think we do. I'll have to check. Thanks.

Not that I know the first thing about quantum physics, but, barring the "if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around" thing, isn't someone always observing reality at any given time? Is the idea that if nobody's in a room, that room doesn't exist? It just starts to exist once someone walks into it?

Wow, and I thought literary theory was abstract.

not *quite*

The room may (or may not) exist - it exists in a state somewhere inbetween until someone observes (or enters) it.

Trick is, until you open the door, you just can't be sure...

Aaah, I see. What if there's a glass window in the door? Until you're close enough to see through it, you can't be sure?
Apr. 25th, 2007 02:20 pm (UTC)
same rules. Unless it's directly observed, the room may or may not exist. It's the act of observation which collapses the probability waveform.

*boggles* Ah, of course O.o
Apr. 25th, 2007 02:31 pm (UTC)
s'all true. I've got a degree in it.
Apr. 25th, 2007 02:52 pm (UTC)
Oh, I don't doubt it for a minute! I just doubt my ability to comprehend it ;)
Apr. 25th, 2007 02:53 pm (UTC)
If you think you understand it, then you've gone wrong somewhere, as my tutor used to tell me.

Apr. 25th, 2007 02:55 pm (UTC)
Hehehe, sounds like literary theory.

Hee. It probably depends what time of week you ask - try it again on Friday night about midnight :D

I'm fairly certain my cats continue to exist when I'm not looking at them. How else to explain the gradual shredding of the sofa when I'm not looking ?
Apr. 24th, 2007 09:01 pm (UTC)
the question is, of course, do *you* exist when they're not looking at you?
Apr. 25th, 2007 12:13 am (UTC)
I must do, other wise how do they explain dirty litter trays becoming clean litter trays ?
Apr. 25th, 2007 02:21 pm (UTC)
Litter Tray Fairies?
Apr. 25th, 2007 07:19 pm (UTC)
What sofa? I don't think I believe it exists...
