That dread machine

President Bush's response to the Virginia Tech shooting? "The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed," Perino said. What would we do without him? Automatic response to a shooting is to get his retaliation in first against the gun control lobby. Hat-tip to caitirin for that.

I have a new computer, w00t. Haven't set it up yet because I'm not planning on connecting it to the internet till I move house and get a wireless modem thing going. I will probably set it up so that I can upload my CDs onto the computer before I move, because this one makes really scary noises when I try to do that, but I need to find the monitor driver CD first, or possibly download it. Anyway, it's very shiny and only slightly baffling. I can't see the scratch that meant I got £300 off it, either.

So, very nice, and with a hole in it! Er, what's the hole for? It's entirely the wrong size and shape to be a handle, and not sturdy enough. Is it just a design thing? It also has front USB ports (yay) and memory card slots for every kind of memory card ever. And a socket that looks from the little icon like it might be for mp3 players. Who knows?! (Yes, I could look in the manual. But that would be dull.)

Endemol are going to do virtual versions of Big Brother, Deal or no Deal and Fame Academy using Second Life avatars. I'm tempted to try and sign up again. I think I would do online BB...

Top Gear viewers, Jeremy would like to know whether you prefer the series to be boring car tests, or hilarious cocking about. (The slight editorialising there is mine. I wouldn't watch a show that just tested cars. But I nearly fell off my sofa laughing watching the full-size remote-controlled cars on Best of TG last night.)

I'm meant to be packing. I've packed a bit, but I'm mostly procrastinating... I get the keys to new house on the 27th, eek! Should I watch the 17 previous eps of Heroes again before the new one next Monday (Eeeeee!) or should I wait until I can watch the whole series in one go? Decisions...

Who the hell came up with GWB's response? I mean he's not going to say anything without a dozen advisors clearing it (I watch The West Wing. I know what I'm on about). Surely they could have come up with somethign better than that. Something like "The President is horrified by this atrocity" and leave it at that woul dbe a hell of a lot better than trying to turn it into a party political.

Well, to be fair, they did say he was horrified too, I just didn't quote that bit :D But yeah, leave it a couple of days before you break out the "guns don't kill people" crap.

Incident in Virginia tragic, but can hardly say the state has "safe" policies in place. When questioned about it by ITV newscaster this morning, the lady they were speaking to seemed to agree that people have the right to bear arms/defend themselves using guns (though she did agree that some guns "might" have been obtained illegally). I am so glad we don't hear about stuff like that happening every day.

Yay, new computer gear :) According to the Ars Technica mini-review, the hole is for additional airflow - part of the 'QuietCase' thing, I guess.

Also, the CNet review says "... a covered front vent that provides both exhaust heat venting and a way to see clear through your desktop. During our test period, we tended to store knicknacks in there." Nice idea - a glove compartment for your PC. Probably not good for airflow, though :)

A-ha! That makes sense. I'll try to refrain from storing things in it :D

Must be something about the 27th, the guy at my work I'm trying to rope into playing vampire is also becoming a homeownwer on the 27th....

It's wicked, I'm chuffed for you, and only a bit jealous :) I'd be tons more jealous but I'm moved waaaay too much in the last year, hehe ;P

ASDA do good thick bin liners, great for chucking stuff in when you can't be arsed anymore :)
