Media

Oooh. George Clooney and Grant Heslov (no, I don't know) are making a six-hour mini-series of Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age. One of my favourite books ever! Possibly even better than Snow Crash, although Snow Crash is his "classic" novel.

And the Dresden Files TV series starts on Sunday on Sci-Fi, just before Battlestar Galactica, which I think is a good spot. Um, in America, but I'm assuming I'll be able to get hold of it. Harry looks right, from the pics I've seen, and the fans seem relatively happy, so...fingers crossed!

Celebrity Big Brother's gone so mad that it's leaked out into normal news media, not just Heat. Almost 8,000 complaints to Ofcom so far about bullying and racism, and BB's response is "Shilpa hasn't complained" and "We're keeping an eye on it". It's only because the story spread from internet forums to the newspapers and now, today, to the TV news, that Endemol/ Big Brother have said anything at all about it. Two of the guests on BBLB had mentioned it, and been quickly hushed. Bah. Now today all of a sudden they have a discussion about it, but Dermot still seems to be trying to deny not only that it's racism (which there could be slight doubt about, depending on your definition) but that it's even bullying, which is ridiculous. Although I've read it's something to do with OFCOM guidelines about giving people the right to reply to accusations like that. Now there's to be questions asked in Parliament, too. Farewell, Jade Goody's "celebrity". Hopefully.

(Edit: I forgot to pick an icon for this, but the one LJ Hook picked seems quite appropriate for Jade.)

Also, from dakegra, The Logic Goats. Love 'em. Logic gates were about the only bit of physics I could do.

I like Diamond Age and all, but the ending always seemed to fall apart to me.

Yeah, I didn't like the Drummers stuff much...I think I just like the first half or so of the book so much that it compensates.

The drummer stuff was wierd.

Also it suffered from his usual inability to actually end a story.

But yeah, the rest of that book was awesome. Let's hope they downplay the drumemrs and emphasise the rest?

As someone who liked the drummers and thought the ending was fine, I'll have to respectfully disagree.

Oh, yes. And now we have her boyfriend, who says about ten sentences a day, four of which are unbelievably dim and the other six of which are amazingly offensive.

From today's Metro,

"It's shameful. I have lost all respect for Jade." from Hannah, Telford.

Color me a big Snow Crash fan, but Neil Stephenson couldn't write a good ending to save his life.

So would it be racist to take the mick out of a cockney? Or someone from the valleys? Because people do that all the time. Personally I think there are more important matters to be discussed in Parliament.

Well, the MP decided to bring it up because of complaints from constituents, which is technically his job. I can think of things I'd rather they talked about, sure, but they're representing the public.

And do you mean just the accent? Cos taking the mick out of her accent - behind her back and to her face - isn't all they've done.

Ooh, wow! I keep raving about The Diamond Age to people - as you say, the ending's a bit off, but the rest of the book more than makes up for it. Pity it's on the Sci-Fi Channel, so I'll never get to see it (legitimately, that is...)

Better than Snow Crash?
I thought Snow Crash was pretty dull.
