I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas

First, thankee to anonymous_greg for the CD! Heh. I'm listening to it now, and I can't wait till I get to I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas o_O Oh, and thanks to spiderpixie and pooka_joe for the card, too. And happy birthday, pooka_joe! If I'd remembered about it before spiderpixie's post yesterday, I'd have sent a card for that *blush*.

The CD was the best thing in the post this morning. I got three parcels. One of the others was the Belkin Tunecast II for my brother, to let him listen to his non-iPod mp3 player through the car radio. The amazon listing says "for all mp3 players". The packaging says "for iPods". The back of the packaging says - in very small writing in the instructions - that the stereo headphone plug fits "all iPods or any other standard audio output device". Hmmm. Ah well, I think it's worth a try, anyway. His other present hasn't turned up yet either, or I wouldn't be so bothered. Still, he's the worst person in the world for buying presents - I *usually* get a present within a couple of months of my birthday, but it's by no means guaranteed - so never mind.

The last parcel I got excited about, thinking it was my Theadless t-shirts, but it turned out to be a large quantity of those strong plastic grey bags you can post stuff in. Less exciting. Another parcel coming tomorrow, which must be the t-shirts. Ooh, or my Buffy DVDs. I think I've got all my Christmas presents now.

Links and stuff: From zotz, a Guardian journalist goes undercover in the BNP. I think the story's going to be in it over a few days. It's kinda scary. And he names a bunch of high profile members of the BNP.

I mentioned yesterday the fact they've changed their mind about the big central ID database, but thessalian points out that they've also announced that biometric ID cards are going to be compulsory for foreign nationals living in Britain from 2008. People that have been living here for decades. It's also going to cost them more to get their visas extended, even though that just means another stamp on your "indefinite leave to stay" page, because that's how they're going to fund this. Additionally, everyone coming to Britain to work or study for any significant period of time will be biometrically tested, and everyone coming from one of the countries we have visa agreements with will be tested even if they're coming for *one day*. [insert swearing, etc]

I'm not hugely into fanvids usually, but londonkds linked to a brilliant one - 10/Rose to Common People. Very nicely links the images to the lyrics, and 10 as the "tourist" is an irresistible image.

And the title of the new Harry Potter book has been revealed. Cut in case of rabid HP spoilerphobes, though if you're here, you've been quiet... Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Oh. It's probably just me, but Hallows is much too similar to Mallows to be ominous. My thought process: "Deathly Hallows. Deathly Mallows, heh. Those must be the white ones, they're really pale..."

I now have a mental image of Mr Potter fighting the Stay-Puft marshmallow man from Ghostbusters...

Well it has 'death' in the title. That's got to be something at least.

I'm going to have to schedule some reading time for all 6 before the 7th is out. Though I may skim-read number 5.

I'm imagining that Simone Clarke won't keep her job for very long.

There was a (comparatively) interesting debate about that in Comment Is Free yesterday - started off being about whether you'd be put off going to the ENB now, and moved on to whether people should lose their jobs because of their membership of political parties. My brain and my gut have different feelings on the subject.
