Should I randomly buy a laptop?

..Probably not. Hmm.

Reasons for:
- home PC is making funny noises and I'm paranoid it's going to DIE HORRIBLY (but not paranoid *enough* to get round to backing stuff up, procrastinatory me)
- I want to be able to sit and watch TV *and* be on the internet
- I want the shiny...

Reasons against:
- Home PC is not yet dead, and if it does die, I'll replace the motherboard anyway. Because I'd need to keep the main computer for the speed and the lovely 17-inch screen for watching Veronica Mars on.
- Supposed to be saving up to buy flat, also Christmas presents, etc.

See, those are DULL reasons.

I put a bid on one last night, and I wish I'd just won it before I had time to overthink the whole thing...

Much cheaper to buy a second TV.

If PC is making funny noises, likely to be hard drive dying. Back things up before it is too late.

Yeah, I really should. I have compromised by buying a shiny 320gb external hard drive, which means I can back up, and I feel like I've treated myself. Hurray!

Back up. Please back up.

My PC died a few weeks ago. No back ups. It had been making noises. I thought it would be okay. I lost all of the chapters of a legal textbook I was co-writing. I had no back ups and have been trying to catch up since (and will continue to do so for the next few months).

Eek :( I don't think I've got anything that important on my computer, but I really should back up. So I've bought a 320gb external drive, and that's my shiny-buying quota for this month.

Hee. It's still dead, and out of warranty, and I think it would cost almost as much or more to repair than to get a new one. (Of course, I haven't actually checked, because buying a new one sounds more fun :S)

I am, hope you're well too! Any luck in the job hunting?

No still jobless, though haven't applied for anything in about a week cos of "what's the point"-ness. I'm sure motivation will return soon :)

Maybe you could part-ex the old laptop; pass the problem onto someone else AND get a new shiny?! ;)

My desktop pc makes horrible noises when it starts up but then seems to settle. Nerve-wracking when it starts because I alwys imagine th hard disk is getting mangled or something similar. Still, it just keeps rolling on.

I have been considering getting a new pc with much higher specs as there seem to be some reasonable deals around.
