Atheism

There's a great article on atheism in Wired, here, (linked to by andrewducker, cheers) discussing New Atheism, which is Richard Dawkins et al's sort of evangelical atheism, and atheism in general. (I ordered The God Delusion the other night, too. Yay.) I always forget how lucky I am to live in Britain rather than America in this respect - Britain, while theoretically a Christian country, really doesn't give much of a crap. America seems to be fuller of religious nutters, and it seems much harder to be an atheist there - I can see how you might have to make a belief system out of it, rather than just not believing.

The comments on that article, though, are the kind that make me despise religious people. (Yes, OK, *some* religious people.) I can't be bothered registering just to fight with stupid people who won't listen to me, but sometimes I really wish I could just transport to another dimension anyone who says "We need God because otherwise we wouldn't have morals" or "Why would atheists have morals if they don't think there's Heaven/ Hell?" or "Atheists all do evil things because they don't have moral rules or ethics". Mind you, it also amuses me that they think so little of themselves - that they think the only reason they're not going round murdering people is because God tells them not to and they're scared they won't get into heaven; and that they don't realise that this point of view says far more about them than about atheists.

Today I'm knackered. Had one of those nights last night where I could swear I didn't sleep at all, though I probably did. And now I'm on a ten-hour shift, ick. Only 3.5 hours to go now so I'm confident that I will actually get through it!

Another new member of staff, another geek and LJ person, though I haven't found out who she is on LJ yet - she just mentioned that she knew someone from online, and I recognised their name from LJ. Which is weird. But yay, the geek quotient in the office is rising nicely.

ARGH. Yes. Religious nutters abound in this country. It's so annoying.

And those comments are just idiotic. I hate it when people seem to think that 'morals' are totally tied up with any kind of religion or faith.

So do I :o( I find it kind of weird that people think we need basically a boss or a teacher to tell us it's wrong to kill people!

Supposedly there's a Creationist in Sean's work (my old work). There is also a Jehovah's witness there, which I didn't know until she told me off for giving her a Christmas card!

But being of a different (or nonexistent) religious persuasion in this country I guess is a little easier for some. I think it really depends on the people around you as well in terms of how much grief you will/will not get. I should know - I get a lot. :-D

Heh, I think it's probably easier to be an atheist than a minority religion.

Very true. Try using the word "witch" in polite social circles. :-D

I'm just going to basically agree with you on the atheism.
And I think morals are more powerful when they are chosen through free will and rational thought. (Which oddly enough, is actually something that's sometimes said in connection with religion, but hey.)

Hmmmm, in my experience, what you lack in quantity, you more than make up for in quality.
