Books and pubs

1. One book that changed your life?

The Hobbit probably got me into fantasy and fandom, and the Dragonlance chronicles got me into fantasy that wasn't classic, IYSWIM. And The Eyre Affair meant I went to Jasper Fforde's website and hung out on his fforum, met a bunch of you lot, and moved to LJ.

2. One book you have read more than once?

I read pretty much everything more than once. The books I've read most often are probably Good Omens, by Pratchett and Gaiman; LOTR; the Anita Blake books; and some of the Chalet School series.

3. One book you would want on a desert island?

Dunno - a thick one. Shakespeare would be good, obviously. If we're assuming I have him...I've got to say LOTR again.

4. One book that made you laugh?

Join Me or anything else by Danny Wallace. And Charlie Brooker's Screen Burn.

5. One book that made you cry?

The last few lines of My Friend Flicka always made me cry when I was a kid - I haven't read it for a while. The bit in LOTR when Sam thinks Frodo is dead, also. Pretty much anything remotely sad, actually - I cry at books far more easily than I cry at real life. I'm not sure if that's healthy or not.

6. One book you wish had been written?

Um...How To Do Proper Magic That Actually Works In Everyday Life :D (but only if it actually works, you understand).

7. This question omitted, apparently.

Nothing to see here, move along. Again.

8. One book you are currently reading?

Familiar Studies of Men and Books by Robert Louis Stevenson. It's a book of collected essays about other authors - Robert Burns, Victor Hugo, Walt Whitman...

9. One book you have been meaning to read?

Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. Anyone recommend it, or definitely not recommend it?

10. Now tag five people.

I feel that would be hypocritical, since I wasn't tagged!
Also, this is a snazzy utility thingy:

Was out at the pub last night with work, and my line manager got drunk and said inadvisable things again...never mind. I think that was the first time I've been in a pub* since the smoking ban, though, in March, and possibly even the first time I've had a drink since then. Not sure if that means I don't have a life, or just that my life doesn't involve pubs much.

*Apart from for lunch a couple of times. Oh, and dinner a couple of times. But not, like, drinking.

Is Summer Flame any good? I read the first three when I was a lot younger, and have been trepidatious about that one...

Yeah! It's good on the same kind of terms the other three are good - never gonna be great literature, but it drags you in.
