Smoking ban

Oh, ffs. I've just found out that Tchai Ovna, my favourite Russian tea shop, is having to extend its outdoor area and muck up the wonderful gardens and things, because the smoking ban in Scotland (coming into effect on the 26th) includes hookahs and shishas. Which use charcoal and pure fruit tobacco, and cause very little smoke if any, and make a wonderful smell. Why do I get the feeling that really, it's just inhaling things in public in general that's been banned, without any research into what's actually harmful or offensive? Cigar clubs and tobaccanists are included in the ban, too. So are white vans and so on, but police cars and driving instructors' cars are exempt, for some reason. It all makes so much sense.

It did occur to me the other day - anyone who's been to Dublin might be able to tell me if this has happened - that far more people will take cannabis out with them to smoke, because it's much less "rebellious" and dangerous to smoke it in the street than in a pub. So that's a good thing - I've been worried about the aggression levels if half of Glasgow's pub-going crowd is out on the pavements at any one time, but if they're all getting stoned that shouldn't be a problem :) and I'm sure it'll all become very sociable. I also just heard a rumour that Dublin's Cigar Club now meets in the Cuban Embassy cos you're still allowed to smoke there - I'd love it to be true, but I suspect it isn't...

If it's not true someone should recommend it to them, that *would* get up the nose of MI5!

I'm not a smoker, but I haven't noticed if more people are smoking cannabis on the streets since the ban came in here... I do know that smokers think the whole going outside to smoke thing is brilliantly social, though, so I don't think it has actually resulted in an increase in agression on the streets. Instead people who would never have talked to each other inside a pub or club get talking to each other when smoking outside :)

This is why I'm against a total ban. If people want to smoke in public places that exist for the sole purpose of smoking, then I don't see a problem. But I quite like smoke free bars. I'd have thought there could be a better compromise.

when I visited dublin with my work, we were all smoking on the street and some wee ned sprayed pepper sprayed mace into the face of one of my colleagues, just for a laugh.

And there are going to be so many fights on the streets of Glasgow after the ban comes in. Thing is, at least in Dublin they CAN have smoking shelters, over here the law is that anything with 50% or more walls cannot be smoked in. Meaning all those little smoking shelters will become illegal. Outdoor smoking rooms will be illegal, etc.

Oh yeah, hope the snow doesn't affect your travelling today. I'm justr watching people sliding about on the road outside the window.

yes, I realise I totally miswrote what I meant to say, don't laugh. Also in dublin because of no smoking, all the pubs smell like old man. eww.

It also makes it illegal to smoke in bus shelters or telephone boxes :p Plus lorry drivers will not be allowed to smoke in their trucks, and van drivers (me) cannot smoke in our vans. Plus the vehicles have to have stickers in the window with the phone number of the manager, so that if anyone sees you smoking in the vehicle they can phone and tell your manager.

Smoking in company cars is ok though, unfair.

Also the thing about no smoking on film sets...that'll ruin the scottish film industry, how will you know someone is the bad guy if they don't smoke?
