Roundup

Good People:

- Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, is in trouble for not being as much of a bigoted wank as the rest of the high-ups in his church. And the people who are against him (Anglicans, I think) are called "primates", which is amusing me far too much.

- Stella Rimmington, ex-head of MI5, says ID cards are a silly idea and the security serves don't support them.

- The Guardian has a good article about political bloggers, some of whom I must read.

Bad People:

- The US has been using white phosphorous in Iraq, but are claiming it's not a chemical weapon and anyway they weren't using it on civilians.

- De Menezes, the innocent Brazilian shot on the tube, was shot with dumdum bullets. They're illegal in war - but not for the police to use, apparently.

- Oops! We've deported most of a family. 16-year-old boy gets left in the COUNTRY alone, after he's not in when the deporters come. This happened at the weekend in Glasgow, and in mainstream media only the Evening Times has picked it up.

Mad people:

- The Wizard Of Oz is Illuminati Mind Control.

- Geldof says, "Make Email History".

Cool shit:

- Grand Illusions Shop has some of the funkiest scientific-type gadgets ever. And the rest of the website is good too.

- A new kind of cute lemur!

White phosphorous won't keep *anyone* safe, frankly...

From a police PoV, a dum-dum round is less likely to go right through the intended victim and into someone else standing behind them.

True, I guess. Means they're definitely going to kill everyone they shoot at, though, which isn't great if they're shooting people based on them looking a bit foreign...

Well, in theory they only shoot if the risk of not shooting justifies killing their target.

Following the revelation that no definite ID was done because the guy watching the door was having a piss, didn't it stop looking so much like it was because he looked possibly foreign?

I didn't see that revelation! I haven't heard anything about it for a month or so until the dumdums thing.

It turned out that the guy watching the door was having a sly piss, so he radioed that someone had left and someone else should have a look at him. For some reason people became convinced there had been a positive ID of one of the wanted people, when in fact there had been no close look at him at all.

Now, if he'd been white someone would probably have noticed, but the decision to follow him (and eventually worse) wasn't made because anyone had had a close enough look to see that he wasn't. As I recall the later coverage, anyway.
