Freak Like Me

The Making Light blog links to an Onion piece about copyediting. Many people on the comments of Making Light say, "But that's just...true, not parody!" Tis true. We are a weird species, copyeditors/ proofreaders. I automatically proofread everything, including, last week, a folder sitting on the shelf behind someone being interviewed on the news, which was panned past fairly rapidly. I had to rewind to check, but sure enough, it said (downwards, making it even harder to read), "Michelneous," or something remarkably similar. And it was in a police station! I was incensed. Nobody else had even noticed the folder's existence.

And! As an extra added bonus, the comments thread on Making Light explains the difference (well, sort of explains...examines the etymology, anyway) between duck tape and duct tape. We love duct tape. And the first thing to come up when you put "duct tape" into Google? Duct Tape Fashion. You can get roses and everything. (Proofreaders reading should be wary of the above link - the apostrophe abuse will cause slight pain.)

ETA: And GIP! From here - there are a few.

Dictionaries don't teach you grammar, though.

Depends on the dictionary! (Does that mean I need a *separate* icon for spelling?)

I automatically proofread everything too. I think it's a disease.

I can edit and proofread other people's work, but I can't do my own.

proofreading:

true story. i was in the room at the time and could not beLIEve that someone would be proofreading something in the background of a news report. i got stuck somewhere between hilarity and astonishment

ended up making pick' rewind the TV so i could check she was right.

which of course she was
