One of my colleagues just came past and I showed him the feed. His comment was "And that's a FIRST world country!". I think that's why everyone's so shocked by this...usually, things like this happen to Other People. It's freaky that it can happen so easily in a city just like this one, to people just like us.

One of our newscasters was relating to us that he had been talking to a colleague and off-handedly said, "I'll be glad to get back to the States when this is all over." Then he realized the magnitude of what he'd said...it really doesn't seem possible something like this could happen in the US.

My brother lives right near New Orleans. He used to own a condo in Slidell, which was one of the hardest-hit areas. He's now just on the other side of the highway from Slidell in Lacombe and he and his wife have to be two of the luckiest people. They evacuated out and when they returned to survey the damage, both ends of their street were flooded, they had a tree down across their driveway and a bunch of crap in their yard. Other than that, no other damage really. A couple of missing roof shingles, a tiny tree had fallen on the back end of their shed. The house and garage were just fine. And he hadn't even had a chance to board up the windows. Lucky bastard! And the tree across their driveway is actually good because it will help prevent any looters from driving up with a truck or something (which has been happening). And a neighbor said he'd watch out for their property while they're gone.

My brother and his wife went to Houston to gather supplies. They're bringing back lots of food and water, etc. And they're going to share with their neighbors. They have a well, so they shouldn't have to worry too much about clean water. Their biggest problem will be getting fuel for a generator. I'm just glad he's safe.

I'm glad your brother and his wife are OK. It all sounds horrible.
