Eee! Eee!

I'm very tempted to buy an Eee. Except I don't really have any need for one, unless I can think of a way to make it essential for my union rep stuff. Although...I was also looking into doing the AQA researching-from-home freelance thingummy, so it would be handy for that.

Mmm. Pretty, and it would mean I could surf the net in bed. (Incidentally, I can't figure out what the difference between an Eee 4G and an Eee 4G Surf is. They have the exact same specs on the website.)

So, has anyone used one? Any cautionary tales, etc? I'm not a Linux user, but I hear the version on the Eee is pretty basic. The thing most of the reviews complain about is the size of the keyboard, but I've got small hands anyway, so I reckon that would be OK.

I have various blog entries in mind because I've been reading all sorts of stuff about racism (a lot on debunkingwhite) and feminism and gender/queer theory - I might even get round to writing them, sometime.

I have a (PINK!) eee and it makes me very happy. It is superwonderfully portable, the screen is fine, I can use it with an external hard drive (also pink) that also weighs hardly anything but which has 250 gigs of space, and it's so handy and useful. And was under $300 with shipping.

Ooooh. I've just looked up external hard drives - didn't realise you could get them as small as that. Cool.

Where did you get it at that price?! I haven't seen anything under about £220, or $400... But the American sites I've looked at won't ship to the UK, anyway. Bah.

Yeah, I remember him saying - meant to go back through and see what he said about it.

They do look really easy to use.

my friend John at work has one and says it's great. Small, highly portable, about the size (and weight) of a hardback.

I want one.

I really want one. I'll be lucky if I hold out till payday in two weeks, at this rate.

According to the register, the 4G comes with a webcam and a bigger battery, unlike the 4G Surf

Aha! Thank you. I probably wouldn't use a webcam, but the bigger battery would be worth paying extra for...

Yup, been there. I've had a post on feminism planned since your "I am not a feminist" comment, with polls and everything, it even has links. I predict it will happen. Maybe. Next month. Possibly.

All I know about the Eee is from Linux fanboys on /., so it's not necessarily a good source. But I am hopeful it's the start of a trend though.

Heheheh. I have all these good intentions... I'm unsure of a lot of the feminist/ racist/ queer stuff just now, but you really have to phrase things right when you're talking about that, otherwise people come from miles around to shout at you. (Possibly I'm still scarred from making the mistake of saying "n*gger" was just a random bunch of letters, when you get right down to it - oops. I knew what I meant.)

Hmm...
It's actually fairly styling, for a PC laptop.
I still prefer a Mac of course.

I'm slightly put off by this on Wikipedia:

Storage on the image, however, cannot be recovered: if a software package is uninstalled, no space is freed, and if a package is updated it may take up space twice.

o_O That's...weird! Can't just be because it's solid state memory. Hmm. It's not a huge problem because I think I'd mostly be using external drives anyway, but definitely odd.

My friend Steve has one. And he set up a virtual one on one of his other computers so he can try out stuff on that before implementing it on the Eee. Geek joy. I want one, but possibly a bit further down the line, when they've ironed out a few annoying bits.

He set up a virtual one? That's marvellously geeky!

It's usually sensible to wait till they've fixed the major problems, but the Eee seems to be calling me.

We got one for my mother for Christmas, and she loves it. The keyboard takes a bit of getting used to, but it's not bad. Hers is white, because at the time we got it, there were only 4 available in the whole province, or something, but it's a really pretty pearly white.

I've been looking at the black ones, predictably! The white one would stay pretty and pearly for about ten minutes in my bag, then it would turn scuffed and dirty, probably.

Also, your icon is fabulous :)

Pete's dad has one, we've been playing with it this weekend. I found the trackpad quite hard to use - I only have a light touch and it wasn't responding very well till I had to come over all heavy handed. The keyboard was quite easy to use, but I have small hands.
