Light sabres!

Um...

Princess Leia in a gold metal bikini!

Er...

Wierd Al Yankovic would never have come up with Y-Y-Y-Y-Yoda had it not been for Star Wars!

Uh...

Princess Leia in a gold metal bikini!

Hmm....

I dunno, I give up.

Light sabres was what kept coming into my head, too. If they were real, that might count...

The financial independence of the Jawas?

No? Not real enough?

Okay then, how about...

Droids serving us drinks in bars?

Not significant or widespread enough?

Let me think...

Hmm... I guess I don't have much more.

Well okay, maybe just...

A couple of fantastic moments in Monkey Island 2?

That's enough for me, at least.

It taught us the value of low expectations.

Definitely true of the prequels! Although even with low expectations, the third one managed to be worse than I imagined...

Shown us that prequels should never never never EVER EVER EVER be made thirty years later.

Or, at least, not by George Lucas.

I got a week's free accomodation in central Manhatten by staying with friends I'd made through a Star Wars fansite. Plus lots of food, transport to and from airports, good company and a trip to see Spamalot on Broadway.

It has inspired us to reach for the stars, to become more,
to create more and to expand our imaginations.

Well, it did revolutionise cinema. Industrial Light and Magic moved the field of special effects forward by decades in one leap. Sure, this has resulted in a lot of tosh, but that was always going to be produced anyway, so in the plus column we have seen some incredibly beautiful images created, and stories come to life that would have been impossible to tell otherwise.

Or, to put it more succintly, Serenity.

Helped expand my understanding of the universe? Even if only by allegory.
